The removal of most of the slag still present in a bloom by gentle hammering while the bloom is still hot or after re-heating (above about 1050̊C) until the slag becomes fluid enough to be squeezed out. A bloom carefully consolidated in this way can result in a clear iron, relatively low in slag, although the care taken over consolidation by early smiths could be rather variable.
