Fining

An obsolete process for removing carbon from cast iron to produce wrought iron. Molten cast iron (pig iron) is oxidised by blowing air through it or by the addition of iron oxides in the form of ore, or a combination of both. By these means steel and carbon-free iron can be indirectly produced.  See also decarburisation.
