Any info on the types of charcoal used in bloomery and blast furnaces in Europe is of interest eg species of wood, calorific value, whether bark was removed eg  oak bark for tanning or fir to reduce P uptake, why was sweet chestnut avoided in BF – crushing strength?

    How’s your French?

    2.  Major work appearing in various guises, L’Art du Charbonnier, by Duhamel de Monceau, best perhaps in the encyclopaedia
